AI hiring field guide
Start with the work, not the buzzwords.
There is no single “AI hire.” The right search begins by connecting your goal to the skills and experience needed to deliver it.
01 · Define
Make the role outcome-led.
Write down what this person should improve, build, or own in the first year. Then separate essential skills from skills that can be learned on the job.
What will they deliver?
Who will they work with?
What technical environment will they inherit?
02 · Map skills
Match expertise to the problem.
AI, data, and engineering roles overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Align the search to the actual system and stage of work.
Data foundations and pipelines
Machine learning and model deployment
LLMs, retrieval, evaluation, and product integration
03 · Assess
Evaluate how people think.
Use structured, role-relevant conversations to learn how a candidate approaches trade-offs, communicates decisions, and solves realistic problems.
Ask for a concrete project example
Explore constraints and trade-offs
Give candidates a clear, fair process
04 · Plan
Choose the right hiring route.
Permanent, contract, executive, graduate development, training, and embedded delivery options solve different needs. Choose based on timing, scope, and ownership.
Define timing and team capacity
Decide whether skills or delivery are missing
Agree on what success looks like
Put the guide into practice
Have a role or project taking shape?
Talk it through with a team that understands technical recruiting and data work.
